Like many people, I have suffered with sinus problems for more years than I care to remember. That constant bunged up feeling coupled with continual sniffing and difficulty breathing through the nose can be a right pain, not only to yourself but also to those around you.
When the sinuses become blocked, the condition is known as sinusitis. – inflammation of the sinus. Symptoms of sinusitis can include trouble breathing through the nostrils, headaches, a feeling of pressure above the eyes, facial pains, toothache and even symptoms of fever.
Causes of sinusitis include infections of the upper respiratory tract such as colds and flu. However, the linings of the sinuses can also become irritated by everyday problems such as air pollution, allergies, cigarette smoke and excess airborne dust.
Over the years, I have tried various decongestant nasal sprays in an attempt to clear the problem and although they did work, I was finding that the time between uses was becoming shorter and shorter. The reason being is that your nose becomes tolerant to the drug in these sprays if they are used for any length of time.
A much more natural and painless way of fighting sinus problems is the use of aromatherapy and essential oils. Inhalation of certain essential oils is a tried and tested way to relieve blocked sinuses.
The best oils for aromatherapy and sinusitis treatment are Pine, Marjoram, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Thyme, Ginger, Rosemary, and Peppermint. Different oils work for different people, so you may need to experiment to find the best one for your own condition. Personally, I have found that Eucalyptus, Pine or Tea Tree oils work best for me.
To use, add around ten drops of your chosen essential oil to a bowl of almost boiling water. Cover your head with a towel, close your eyes and inhale the scented steam through both nostrils for about ten minutes. You should also blow your nose frequently to get rid of the loosened mucus.
This procedure will help to relieve the pressure that you are feeling in your head and nasal area and also help you breathe easier through your nose.
Aromatherapy is a far better alternative to taking medicines that will potentially give you other side effects that you don’t want to have.
