Essential Oil Types

Essential oils, which are widely used in various aromatherapy treatments, are occasionally referred to as the quintessence of a plant's being. The Oxford English Dictionary defines quintessence as an extract from something, comprising in concentrated form, its most essential principle.

Essential oils are concentrated fragrant liquids extracted from various aromatic plant material by means of a process known as distillation. These all-natural organic substances are produced in various glands and sacs in aromatic plants. Each essential oil is generally produced in a single part of the plant, with the exception of a handful of cases.

When a plant provides essential oils in one or more of its parts, variations of aroma along with chemical composition take place. For instance, the oil from the leaves of the cinnamon tree features a cinnamon and clove like smell while the oil from the bark has the characteristic cinnamon aroma. Bitter orange essential oil is a product of the peel while petit grain comes from the leaf and neroli from the blossom. All feature distinctive scents yet have very similar properties.
